Organic clothing, fair trade clothes and eco fashion: About the Ethical Boutique

About ONE:

We source all our fashions from companies who:

use verifiable organic materials, or conduct fair trade business with developing countries, or re-use, re-cycle and re-invigorate vintage fashion, or use locally and ethically produced raw materials, or work to improve social and industrial conditions in developing countries, and always design gorgeous clothes that you will love to wear.

ONE

Ethical Boutique, York

Recycled fashion, fairtrade and organic clothing in the heart of the city of York, a city renowned for its excellent and varied shopping.

Having opened in 2007, this privately-owned boutique is quickly developing a following with women throughout Yorkshire.  Owner Anne McCrickard opened ONE in response to the need for stylish clothing from ethical sources to be available in a high street store.

On the subject of buying, Anne is quick to point out that ethical clothes and suppliers are now at all the world’s leading annual fashion shows including the famous Prêt a Porter in Paris. “People have often thought that ethical clothing is dull and without style but that isn’t true. It might have been the case in the early days but now A-list celebrities wear many of ONE’s designer pieces. Our Summer collection is luxurious, the fabrics include cashmeres, alpaca and merino wool, 100% organic pima cotton and hemp/silks. I stock designs from leading international labels including, Ciel, Stewart and Brown, Wildlifeworks, People Tree and Mudra as well as recycled designs by Deborah Lindquist’s and Emmeline 4 Re. The range from Makepiece is designed and manufactured in Yorkshire from locally sourced wools. Their pieces are stylish but with a very feminine and sexy twist.”

Anne knows the importance of being able to try the clothes on and, although most of her range available to buy through ONE’s website, she welcomes visitors to the shop and also attends some of the regions leading fairs. “The collections are more than just beautiful items of clothing - they also support local or world issues. Some of my clients are keen to know the story behind these issues and meeting them enables me to expand on this. Not everyone can get into York so it is important that ONE is available from other places."
